Evaluation of cardiac motion in MRI

Heart motion can be observed on a series of dynamic images acquired using Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CMRI). Though global motion biomarkers, such as stroke volume or ejection fraction, are used in everyday clinic diagnosis, there are no popular parameters describing local motion of the cardiac muscle. In tagged MRI technique, spatial modulation of magnetization is used to create tag lines. Tag lines move with the tissue making both motion observation and quantitative motion estimation more effective. To quantify cardiac deformation – one of the local motion parameters – Harmonic Phase (HARP) algorithm can be used. It is based on a fact, that phase of spectral peak of the tag pattern is proportional to local motion amplitude. We implemented HARP algorithm in MATLAB environment. In this paper we want to present results of using HARP algorithm on data from a healthy volunteer and a patient with cardiomyopathy.
